Melbourne City FC is excited to announce the signing of Olyroos centre-back, Kai Trewin, on a three-year deal that will see him in City blue until at least the end of the 2026/27 season.
At just 22 years of age, the ball-playing defender joins City with a wealth of first-team experience, having made 116 career appearances since his debut as an 18-year-old for Brisbane Roar in 2020.
His strong form during the 2023/24 season was rewarded with his first A-League All Stars selection. Trewin is set to take on English Premier League giants Newcastle United at Marvel Stadium next week, alongside soon-to-be City teammates Mathew Leckie and Tolgay Arslan.
A talented player both on and off the ball, the young defender is regarded as one of the brightest young centre-backs in the country, having represented Australia at U20 and U23 levels.
Trewin becomes the Club’s first new signing ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, spoke to Trewin’s compatibility with the City football methodology, philosophy, and style of play the Club is known for.
“Kai is an impressive young footballer who we have monitored closely in recent years, and we’re delighted to welcome him to the Club.
“His age profile as well as his defensive qualities and ability to play out from the back is exactly the type of central defender we look for at City, so I’ve got no doubt that Kai will complement our squad well.”
Trewin noted the Club’s track record of developing young players as a key reason why he made the move to City.
“As soon as I was given the opportunity to join City, I jumped at it. The type of football that the Club plays and the quality of the facilities are top level – I don’t think there’s any better place to be in Australia.
“Seeing so many young players come to City, develop their game, and go on to make moves overseas and represent the Socceroos was a big reason why I wanted to sign with the Club.
“I can’t wait to join my new teammates for a big pre-season and meet the City fans at AAMI Park.”
