Australian footballing icon re-signs with City

Melissa Barbieri’s remarkable professional career will extend into a historic 28th year, as the Australian football icon re-signs with Melbourne City FC for the 2024/25 season.

A legend of the game, Barbieri boasts an unmatched CV having led the Matildas to multiple Olympic and World Cup campaigns, alongside over 100 domestic appearances.

Barbieri’s impact extends far beyond the pitch, having proven an invaluable member of City’s squad since 2017. Her leadership and football expertise will see her continue the dual role of player and Assistant Coach, supporting newly appointed Head Coach Michael Matricciani and his coaching staff as City embarks on an exciting campaign both in Asia and the A-League Women’s competition.

Barbieri, capped 86 times for the Matildas, will continue to mentor young goalkeeper Sophia Varley and provide invaluable guidance to Spanish shot-stopper Malena Mieres, who is embarking on her first season in Australia.

Barbieri’s re-signing brings City’s squad close to completion as the team prepares for the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League this October.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, spoke about the impact Barbieri has had during her time at the Club.

“Bubs is a legend of Australian football and a huge part of Melbourne City.

“She’s the heart and soul of our Women’s football program, and an asset in many ways to the Club as a whole, and we’re delighted to have her back for another season.”

Melbourne City FC A-League Women’s Head Coach, Michael Matricciani, also spoke highly of Barbieri’s impact on the team, both as a player and a mentor.

“We’re thrilled to have Melissa back with us for another season. Her experience, leadership, and passion for the game are invaluable to both the players and coaching staff.

“Her presence on and off the field continues to set the standard for our younger players, and we’re looking forward to what she’ll continue to bring this season, especially with the exciting challenges ahead in both the A-League and the Asian Champions League.”

Embarking on her 28th year as a professional footballer, Melissa Barbieri said she couldn’t see herself anywhere else.

“Melbourne City is my home and I’m proud to be continuing my journey here. Every day I get to live out my teenage dream of being a professional footballer.

“To wear this badge on a daily basis gives me a huge sense of pride.

“To have a chance to do it on a larger scale in the Asian Champions League is also another thing I can tick off my football bucket list.

“I believe in this team, and I’m grateful to be part of such a fantastic group of people as we push for success together.”
