Melbourne City FC goalkeeper, Jamie Young, has announced his retirement from professional football effective immediately after an impressive career spanning 228 A-League Men’s appearances.
The experienced shot-stopper joined City in July 2023 and was a key figure last season, playing every minute of the campaign and recording 12 clean sheets.

This season, he continued to be an influential presence, providing leadership and mentoring the Club’s next generation of goalkeepers.
Young’s storied career has seen him named in the PFA Team of the Season on multiple occasions, while he was also named Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017/18 and became a Championship winner a few seasons later.
Reflecting on his professional career, Young said:
“I’ve been fortunate enough to play the game of football for the last 24 years and I’m glad that I could finish it here with Melbourne City, the best Club in Australia.

“I’ve fought as long as I could to play and I think now the is the right time to retire. I’ve loved playing the game of football and have been lucky enough to play all around the world and meet some incredible people.
“I look forward to now watching the progress of the A-League from afar. I’d like to thank Melbourne City again and I’m proud to have represented the Club, just as I have with Brisbane Roar and Western United”
Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, commented on Young’s illustrious career:
“Throughout my time in the A-League, Jamie has been one of the best and most highly respected goalkeepers I’ve seen.
“His professionalism and work ethic have allowed him to perform at a high level for an extended period, which was a key reason we brought him to the Club.
“We thank him for the positive impact he’s had at Melbourne City—particularly on the young goalkeepers coming through our ranks—and wish him all the best for the future.”
