City forward Bruce Kamau believes his first City goal is not too far away, saying his contribution to the team is first and foremost in his mind.
The Kenyan-born forward has made the right wing position his own since arriving in Melbourne, playing a role in the ever-present City attack that has scored a total of 14 goals this season, second only to league leaders Sydney FC.
With three assists already 2016/17, an elusive goal has been the only thing Kamau has been missing this season.
Kamau prepares to take on the side who he scored his last A-League goal against, coincidentally in the 2016 Grand Final, and feels this week could be the week he opens his account.
“Every attacking player wants to score and I think that’s what I’ve been missing the last few games,” Kamau said.
“It will definitely come and once the first one goes in, hopefully they continue coming. You want to be scoring but as long as you are contributing to the team in a positive manner, then there’s always going to be things you can work on and that is one of the things.
“I remember them pretty well last season in the final. I scored against them and hopefully I can replicate that like the FFA Cup [Quarter Final]. We played quite well and we won that 4-1 so I think if we go out there and play the same as we did in that game, I think we’ll do well and come away with the three points.”
The forward says the focus has been on their own game this week on the training track as he and the group prepare to take on a Western Sydney side languishing in seventh position without a clean sheet this season.
“We’re focused on what we need to do and ourselves rather than the opposition and that’s the way it has been so far,” he said.
“A lot of teams have seen us play and we like to play high. We’ve played with three at the back, four at the back as well so a lot of teams are sitting in and waiting to hit us on the counter.
“I think it’s us dealing with that and learning how to play against that more than anything and I think the two results that we didn’t win, you can see that where we failed and where we could have been better.
“Each game we improve and we get better and better and as long as we continue that, we’ve got the players and the coaches are fantastic so we are only going to improve as the season goes on.”
Kamau and City travel to the Harbour City on Thursday to prepare for Friday’s clash with Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium, kick-off 7.50pm. Catch all the action on Fox Sports 505 and SBS2.
