Melbourne City FC has taken out the 2015-16 Westfield W-League Premiership, defeating Brisbane Roar 1-0 on the Gold Coast.
City required three points in order to seal an unassailable lead at the top-of-the-table, securing its first piece of silverware with two games remaining.
The win also saw Melbourne register a record 10th straight victory, surpassing Sydney FC’s tally of nine in 2009-10.
It was Kim Little who gifted her side an early lead, netting her sixth goal of the season inside the opening 10 minutes.
Lisa De Vanna’s delivery found the Scot unmarked inside the area, tucking her effort past ‘keeper and Seattle Reign teammate Haley Kopmeyer.
Steph Catley then almost doubled City’s lead.
The full-back struck her attempt towards goal, deflecting off Roar defender Ruth Blackburn onto the crossbar.
The hosts however provided City with plenty of stern resistance.
Katrina Gorry and Amy Chapman both threatened for Brisbane inside the opening 45 minutes, providing the odd nervous moment for Joe Montemurro’s back four.
At the other end, Kopmeyer was in superb form, executing a number of fine saves to maintain a 1-0 score line.
Roar’s custodian was then at her best in the second half.
The American thwarted De Vanna on more than one occasion before being forced into two brilliant saves within the space of a minute to foil Larissa Crummer and Little from adding to the margin.
Brianna Davey saw the most action out of her two previous 2015-16 W-League appearances.
The 20-year-old made number of vital saves in the second half as Brisbane searched for an equaliser.
Despite Melbourne dominating possession throughout the contest it was end-to-end football as the match entered its final stages.
Both ‘keeper’s were tested late as stoppage time loomed but a triumphant Melbourne City held firm, taking out its first piece of silverware.
