Melbourne City Women’s FC quartet Lisa De Vanna, Steph Catley, Larissa Crummer and Laura Alleway all featured for the Matildas last night as Alen Stajcic’s side succumbed to a 1-0 loss to England.
The Westfield Matildas have been beaten 1-0 by England in an international friendly in China on Tuesday night.
A lone second-half strike from Isobel Christiansen settled the contest, with the Matildas unable to breach England’s net despite long periods of dominance.
Coach Alen Stajcic made several changes to the starting side that drew 1-1 with China on Sunday night, as the Matildas continue to prepare for next year’s Olympic qualifiers.
Sam Kerr had a couple of early chances, with a low angled shot well held by England’s goalkeeper Karen Bardsley and a goal bound header from a Katrina Gorry cross producing a fine reflex save shortly after.
Emily van Egmond will feel she should’ve done better when she had the chance to break the deadlock on the half-hour but unfortunately headed over the bar from six yards out.
The world No.5 were not without their own chances with Eniola Aluko firing a shot into the crossbar before the break.
England opened the scoring shortly after the interval when Christiansen produced a neat finish after being played into the box by teammate Lucy Bronze.
Kyah Simon, Tameka Butt and Alanna Kennedy were all second-half substitutes as the Aussies tried to find an equaliser but the scoreline finished 1-0 to England.
While no doubt disappointed by result the Matildas had their efforts over the last 12 months recognised at the Women’s Health I Support Women In Sport Awards in Sydney as the full-time whistle was sounding.
The Westfield Matildas took out the “A-Team of the Year” award, against strong competition from Australia’s netball, hockey, cricket and rugby sevens sides.
