CALLED UP: Behich and Leckie named in Socceroos squad

City stars Aziz Behich and Mathew Leckie have been called up to Graham Arnold’s Socceroos squad for the September international window.

Set to take on Mexico in Texas, the City duo are the only two Australian-based players selected, with Arnold preferring to take a mostly overseas-based contingent of players into camp for this window.

Recently having returned to the club after a long stint in Europe, Behich made his first appearance for City since 2014 in Sunday’s Australia Cup win over Wellington.

Leckie has appeared in both of City’s Australia Cup wins and is set to pull on the Socceroos shirt for just the second time since a historic FIFA World Cup campaign where he scored a famous goal against Denmark.

They are joined in the Socceroos squad by City Academy graduates Nathaniel Atkinson, Denis Genreau and Connor Metcalfe, while Jordan Bos was ruled out through injury (appendicitis).

Three-time City Premiership winners Aiden O’Neill and Tom Glover were also named in the 23-man squad.

The standalone fixture against Mexico will be played at AT&T Stadium on Sunday 10 September and kicks off at 12:00pm (AEST). The match will be aired live and free on 10 Bold and 10 Play, while it’s also available to watch on Paramount+.
