Shelby McMahon ‘honoured’ to make her professional starting debut at 15

Melbourne City youngster, Shelby McMahon, says she’s honoured to have made her professional starting debut for City in the side’s 0-0 Melbourne Derby draw on Sunday.

Becoming the third youngest player to debut for the Club, McMahon was quick to showcase that age is just number, bossing the midfield in the crucial clash.

Showing composure beyond her years, McMahon slotted into the 10 position, replacing the injured Rhianna Pollicina with a Player of the Match performance.

Following the match, the Junior Matildas captain reflected on what the milestone meant to her.

“It was such an honour to make my starting debut for City, especially in a game like the Derby,” McMahon reflected.

“Obviously I had big shoes to fill with Mini [Rhianna Pollicina] out, but I’m stoked to have been able to get my first 90 minutes and can’t wait to keep building with this team.”

Since joining City in January, McMahon has been quick to impress, earning her first professional appearance before her starting debut.

“I’ve really enjoyed my first few months at City learning the City way and getting to know all the girls,” she said. “It’s been such a good learning experience for me in the professional environment.”

“Being able to learn from the likes of Mini, Stotty and Laura Hughes in the 6 role, has been massive for my development and I’m so grateful for all the girls.

“I’ve really enjoyed training and playing under Dario, and he’s been super supportive of me.”

City currently sit third on the league ladder, with a vital two games left in the regular season.

The youngster will be looking to help her side finish as high as possible ahead of the Finals Series.

“With only a couple of games left in the season, I’m just looking to get some minutes and do whatever I can for the team to help us get all the way to the Finals,” McMahon said.

“I’m super excited to see how far this team can go.”
