Promising full-back signs first senior contract

Melbourne City FC is thrilled to secure the long-term future of yet another exciting City Academy product, with 17-year-old full-back, Peter Antoniou, signing a three-year scholarship contract with an option for a further year.

A modern-day defender who is comfortable playing on either side of defence or as a holding midfielder, the right-footed Antoniou becomes the third player in Club history to progress through City’s entire Player Development Pathway

Following fellow Academy graduates Jayden Necovski and Lawrence Wong, the young defender began his journey in the City Football School program as an 11-year-old before earning a place in the City Academy in 2019.

Antoniou’s dream of becoming a footballer and subsequent rise through the ranks has been inspired by his cousin and former City Academy product, Josh Rachele, who spent two years at the Club before making the full-time switch to AFL, drafted by the Adelaide Crows in 2021.

The young defender has represented Australia at both U16 and U17 level and was selected for the most recent Young Socceroos squad for the ASEAN U19 Championships.

Possessing a strong technical foundation and great strength on the ball, Antoniou is a threat driving forward into the final third, with his crossing and finishing ability making him dangerous at both ends of the pitch.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, spoke to the seamless fit in transitioning him to the first-team squad.

“Peter has all of the qualities and skills that we look for in a City full-back that complement our style of play.

“He has a bright future ahead of him, and with hard work and a commitment to constantly improve, we believe he can become an important player for our squad in the years to come.”

Senior Academy Manager, Simon Zappia, highlighted Antoniou’s work ethic and journey through City’s Academy.

“Not many players have worked as hard and deserve this opportunity more than Peter. From a young age, he has been a constant role model for others in our Academy with his professionalism and general approach to development.

“The staff amongst the Academy are very excited to see him earn this opportunity and are confident he will grab it with both hands.”

Speaking after signing his first senior contract, Peter Antoniou was delighted to take the next step in his football journey.

“It’s an amazing feeling to have started in City Football Schools and work my way through the Academy to sign a first-team contract.

“I’ve been working hard towards this for years, so it’s a really special moment for myself and my family. Right now, I’m fully focused on getting fit and doing everything I can to continue to develop and hopefully get some first team minutes this season.”
