Young goalkeeper becomes City’s latest Academy graduate

Melbourne City has promoted its seventh Academy graduate in the past six months with 17-year-old goalkeeper, Lachie Charles, becoming the latest to commit his future, inking a three-year deal.

Charles, who started his journey with the Melbourne City Football School, becomes the fourth player to progress through City’s entire Player Development Pathway, following in the footsteps of Jayden Necovski, Peter Antoniou, and Lawrence Wong.

Before dedicating himself to goalkeeping, Charles played both as a striker and a goalkeeper, honing elite foot skills that are now integral to his playing style.

It’s Charles’ play with the ball at his feet paired with his impressive decision-making ability which makes his playing out from the back extremely strong — a desirable trait for all Melbourne City teams.

His strength in the air and shot-stopping abilities have earned him recognition as one of the Academy’s most promising goalkeepers.

Although his playing time at VPL1 level was limited this season due to A-League contracted goalkeepers often featuring between the sticks, Charles made the most of his opportunities, saving three penalties in just eight appearances.

Charles’ senior contract officially starts on July 1, 2025, and includes a trigger for a further two years.

Melbourne City’s Senior Academy Manager, Simon Zappia, spoke highly of Charles’ recent development.

“Lachie really took his opportunity this year in the VPL and was a huge part in the team’s success towards the back end of the season.

“He has always showcased a high level of skill with his feet but has taken a huge step with his shot-stopping in the past 12 months.

“We are delighted to see Lachie work his way through the entire Academy system and now have an opportunity with the first team.”

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, also emphasized the qualities that set Charles apart.

“Lachie possesses all the key attributes we expect from a City goalkeeper. His ball-playing ability, composure under pressure, and impressive development over the last year make him a standout prospect.

“With the right mindset and dedication, Lachie certainly has the potential to become a first-team number one in the future.”

After signing his first professional contract, Lachie Charles expressed his pride and excitement.

“Melbourne City has been my home for many years, and I am thrilled to make the step up to the first team.

“While I’m proud of what I have achieved so far, I know the hard work really begins now.

“I’ve already learned so much in the first-team environment and look forward to continuing my development alongside the talented goalkeepers at the Club.”
