Melbourne City captain Rebekah Stott shared her thoughts as the team extended its unbeaten streak to 18 league games on Saturday afternoon, joining the A-League Women’s record for the longest unbeaten run with a 1-1 draw against Canberra United at McKellar Park.
While City were forced to settle for a share of the points, Stott highlighted the positives to take from the performance.
“It’s a bit disappointing to draw and drop two points… it’s frustrating,” Stott said post-match. “But I think there’s still a lot of good things that came out of the game for us.”
The result saw City equal the A-League Women’s record for longest unbeaten run in league history (18 games), with the Club’s streak extending to 21 games when including AFC Women’s Champions League fixtures.
Despite the milestone, Stott explained the team’s focus remains firmly on their performances rather than records.
“We’re super proud to achieve that. We obviously want to go and beat that record, but to be honest, we haven’t been talking a lot about it,” she said. “We know it’s a goal, but it’s not something that we’re focusing on every single day. We want to be hard to beat, and I think being hard to beat can help you get that record. So that’s what we’re aiming for.”
City’s defensive resilience has been a key feature of their success, but Stott acknowledged the need to tighten up certain areas as the season progresses.
“I think you can spin that in a positive way that teams aren’t really hurting us from playing through us,” she said. “Obviously, we want to clean that up. I think it’s just about being able to constantly stay in the game and stay switched on. By the end of the season, we can definitely clean that up – it’s something in our control.”

Looking ahead, City will turn their attention to next Sunday’s away clash against Brisbane Roar. Stott expects another tough challenge but is confident in the team’s ability to build on their strong attacking play.
“Brisbane is a very tough match, especially in Brisbane in the heat like it is here [in Canberra],” she said. “But I think in the last 15, 20 minutes we created a lot of opportunities. So I think we’ll just be looking to build off that and really start to be clinical and put the ball away.”
City will now shift their focus to preparation for their trip north, aiming to continue their unbeaten run in what is set to be an important clash.
