AWCL FINAL PREVIEW: City V Wuhan Jiangda

Continental glory is within reach for Melbourne City’s record-breaking Women’s squad, who will play the biggest match in Club history on Saturday night.

After a dramatic Semi-Final win over Hyundai Steel Red Angels earlier this week, City is now just one win away from being crowned Champions of Asia.

Standing in our way is Chinese powerhouse Wuhan Jiangda, with the Final set to take place in front of their home crowd in Wuhan.

City fans back home won’t miss a moment, with the match to be broadcast live and free via 10play.

Riding the Wave

Momentum is well and truly on City’s side heading into the decider after a resilient and determined showing in Wednesday’s Semi-Final.

Faced with extreme heat and humidity, Michael Matricciani’s side overcame testing conditions—and one of Asia’s most storied clubs—to book a place in the Final.

Locked at 0-0 deep into stoppage time, it was 17-year-old Shelby McMahon who stole the headlines with a stunning long-range strike in the 94th minute.

That moment of brilliance sealed a 1-0 victory and sent City through, providing the ultimate injection of belief and momentum ahead of one final challenge.

One Last Game

It’s been a remarkable 2024/25 campaign for Melbourne City, and now just one game remains—a shot at continental silverware.

After completing an unbeaten regular season to claim the A-League Women’s Premiers Plate, and now reaching the Club’s first-ever AFC Final, the campaign has already made history.

Despite a narrow and heartbreaking loss in the domestic Semi-Finals, City has bounced back in style on the international stage.

With just one defeat from 30 matches all season, Matricciani’s squad will be full of confidence and belief that they can go one step further and finish this unforgettable season by being crowned Champions of Asia.

Oppo Watch

Awaiting City on Saturday night is the biggest test of the season: Chinese Women’s Super League champions Wuhan Jiangda.

Fresh from a 2-0 win over Ho Chi Minh City in their own Semi-Final, Wuhan will be riding a wave of home support and will be eager to become the first team to lift the AFC Women’s Champions League trophy.

Key players include Wang Shuang—one of the most decorated players in Asia, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur and capped over 100 times by China—as well as Song Duan, who was also on the scoresheet midweek.

Forward Terry Engesha, the current AWCL Golden Boot leader, will also feature prominently after joining Wuhan from Red Angels post the Group Stage.

City’s backline, led by leaders Rebekah Stott and Taylor Otto, will have to be at their best to keep Wuhan’s attacking threats at bay.
