What happened?

It was a difficult start to the contest, with City unable to find our rhythm early as the visitors gained control and built a lead heading into half-time.

Despite the challenging opening period, we continued to compete and looked to work our way back into the game, showing resilience even as we went into the break trailing by a four-goal margin.

Heidelberg picked up where they left off after the restart, adding to their advantage early in the second half and putting further pressure on City.

We responded well though, lifting our intensity and beginning to create more opportunities in the attacking third. That response was rewarded in the 58th minute when Ellie Kirkby found the back of the net, finishing well after sustained pressure.

Just a minute later, we struck again through Jami Marandola, who produced a composed finish from inside the box to find the far corner and give the goalkeeper no chance. Two goals in quick succession gave City a strong burst of momentum.

We looked to build on that period, introducing Eva Chopin just after the hour mark before Joanna Zois and Briana Zdravkovski entered the game in the 70th minute, helping us maintain our energy and attacking presence.

We continued to push forward and were rewarded again late in the contest, with Mary Brown producing a superb long-range strike in the 89th minute to round out the scoring.

While we were unable to close the gap further, there were clear positives to take from the second-half performance, with the group showing strong character and attacking intent.

What’s Next?

City return to action on Saturday 9 May, travelling to face South Melbourne at Lakeside Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 2:30pm.
