Matricciani commits future to City after historic success

Melbourne City FC has secured the future of A-League Women’s Head Coach Michael Matricciani, with the two-time Premiership-winning coach signing a new deal through to the end of the 2027/28 season.

The extension follows an extraordinary first two seasons in charge, during which Matricciani guided City to back-to-back Premierships helping extend the Club’s run to three straight Premiers Plates, a Championship and consecutive AFC Women’s Champions League qualifications.

In his first season as a professional head coach, Matricciani guided City to an invincible Premiership-winning campaign, becoming the first team in Ninja A-League history to complete an entire home-and-away season undefeated.

He also led City to the AFC Women’s Champions League Final at the first attempt, narrowly missing continental silverware after a penalty shootout.

He followed that success by guiding City to a second consecutive Premiership in 2025/26 before securing the Club’s first Championship since 2020, completing a memorable domestic double.

Beyond the trophies, Matricciani has built a high-performance culture defined by clear standards, accountability and continuous improvement, while maintaining a distinct football identity and continuing to develop players capable of performing at the highest level.

His impact has also earned international recognition, with Matricciani recently named among ESPN’s Top 20 women’s club football managers.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said extending Matricciani’s contract was an important step for the Club.

“Michael has had an outstanding impact since arriving at Melbourne City and has exceeded even our highest expectations,” Petrillo said.

“The success we’ve achieved over the past two seasons reflects the work Michael and his staff have put in every day, but just as importantly, they’ve created a culture where players are challenged, supported and empowered to be their best.

“While we’re incredibly proud of everything Michael has achieved, we firmly believe the best is still to come. Securing his future gives us continuity as we continue to build on the success of our Women’s program and pursue further success in the years ahead.

“He’s one of the most exciting coaches in the game, and we’re delighted he’ll continue leading our Women’s program into the future.”

Matricciani said he was excited to continue the journey at Melbourne City.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the trust and support the Club has shown in me,” Matricciani said.

“From the moment I arrived, I’ve felt aligned with the Club’s ambition, values and football philosophy, and it’s been a privilege to work with such a talented group of players and staff.

“We’ve achieved some special things together over the last two seasons, but I genuinely believe there is still so much more this group can accomplish.

“I’m excited for what’s ahead and look forward to continuing to build on the foundations we’ve created together.”
