ALL STAR: Barbieri appointed A-League Women All Stars Assistant Coach

Melbourne City goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri has been appointed as an Assistant Coach for the A-League Women All Stars ahead of next month’s blockbuster clash against English Women’s Super League champions Chelsea Women.

The appointment is another fitting recognition for one of Australian football’s most respected figures, with Barbieri joining All Stars Head Coach Jeff Hopkins’ coaching staff for the showcase fixture at Allianz Stadium.

A pioneer of the women’s game in Australia, Barbieri has continued to play an invaluable role both on and off the pitch throughout her decorated career.

The former Matildas captain enjoyed another memorable campaign in City blue last season, helping Melbourne City secure a historic Premiership-Championship double while providing invaluable leadership and mentorship to the squad.

In her 11th season in the competition, Barbieri’s experience proved instrumental as City claimed a record-breaking third consecutive Premiership before defeating Wellington Phoenix 3-1 at AAMI Park to lift the Championship.

Now, the experienced goalkeeper will bring that leadership to the A-League Women All Stars, helping guide the competition’s best players as they take on one of the world’s leading clubs.

The appointment also continues Melbourne City’s strong representation across the All Stars setup, with Rebekah Stott, Shelby McMahon, Leticia McKenna and Aideen Keane all selected in the playing squad.

The All Stars fixture presents another opportunity to showcase the quality of the Ninja A-League on the international stage, with Barbieri set to play an important role from the sidelines when the competition’s best face Chelsea Women on Wednesday 12 August.
