Melbourne City legend Melissa Barbieri will extend one of Australian football’s most remarkable careers, signing on for a 30th professional season in 2026/27.
The veteran goalkeeper has made more than 100 professional appearances throughout her career, including 42 in City colours, with every appearance further extending her record as the oldest player to feature in Australian national league history.
Now 46, Barbieri continues to provide invaluable experience and leadership to City’s playing group, while also balancing her playing duties with her dual role as an Assistant Coach.
Across almost a decade at Melbourne City, the former Matildas captain has helped shape a sustained period of success, lifting four Premierships and three Championships.
While her experience between the posts remains a valuable asset, Barbieri’s influence extends far beyond matchday, continuing to play an integral role in fostering the high-performance environment that has underpinned the standards and sustained success of City’s Women’s program.
Melbourne City FC Director of Football Michael Petrillo said Barbieri remained an invaluable member of the Club’s playing and coaching staff.
“Melissa has achieved just about everything possible in Australian football and at Melbourne City, and the experience and leadership she brings to our group is unmatched,” Petrillo said.
“Her impact extends well beyond what she contributes on matchday. Through her dual role as a player and Assistant Coach, she continues to help develop the next generation of players while setting the standards we expect across our Women’s program.
“To have someone entering a 30th professional season and still performing at an elite level is extraordinary, and we’re incredibly proud to have Bubs continuing at Melbourne City.”
Barbieri said she was delighted to continue her journey with City.
“Melbourne City is such a special place and I’m incredibly proud to have called it home for almost a decade,” Barbieri said.
“I still love coming in every day, working with this group and being part of the environment we’ve created together.
“I’m as motivated as ever to contribute in any way I can, and I’m really excited to continue working alongside some incredible teammates, coaches and staff for another season.”
