Melbourne City FC Academy product James Nieuwenhuizen has committed his long-term future to the Club, signing a contract extension until the end of the 2028/29 season, with a trigger for a further year.
Nieuwenhuizen first joined the City Academy in 2019, arriving from Goulburn Valley Suns before signing his first professional contract with the Club in 2021.
The 22-year-old has continued to progress through City’s goalkeeping program, consistently developing his game through his strong work ethic and commitment under the guidance of the Club’s coaching staff.
His first-team debut arrived in August 2024 in the Australia Cup, before an ACL injury early the following year sidelined him for an extended period.
After completing his recovery, Nieuwenhuizen earned his A-League Men’s debut in April this year, marking the occasion with a clean sheet in a strong win over Western Sydney Wanderers.
He remained between the posts days later as City recorded another important win against Central Coast Mariners.
Following the departure of Socceroo goalkeeper Patrick Beach, Nieuwenhuizen was given the first opportunity in goal this season, starting City’s opening two competitive fixtures in the Australia Cup.
Now locked in long-term, Nieuwenhuizen will continue his development under Goalkeeper Coach Sander Krabbendam, working alongside Macklin Freke as part of City’s goalkeeping group.
Melbourne City FC Director of Football Michael Petrillo said Nieuwenhuizen’s extension was a reward for his continued development and resilience.
“We’ve seen James come a long way during his time at the Club, and he has had to work incredibly hard for his opportunity at senior level,” Petrillo said.
“His attitude, mindset and resilience have always been impressive, particularly through the challenges he has faced in recent years.
“James continues to develop strongly within our goalkeeping program, and we’re pleased to have him commit his future to the Club as he continues to compete for regular senior minutes.”
Nieuwenhuizen said he was excited to continue his journey with Melbourne City.
“Melbourne City has been home for a long time now, and I’m delighted to extend my time with the Club,” Nieuwenhuizen said.
“I’ve already had some incredible memories here, and I’m especially grateful for the support I received from the coaches, staff and everyone at the Club during my recovery from my knee injury. They were always there for me and played a big role in helping me get back on the pitch.
“I’ll keep working as hard as I can to continue earning opportunities and contribute to more success in the seasons ahead.”
