Melbourne City is preparing for a crucial AFC Women’s Champions League Group Stage finale, with a blockbuster clash against Beijing Jingtan FC awaiting on Saturday night (AEDT).
After bouncing back from an opening defeat to PFC Nasaf with a commanding 7-0 win over Kaya FC-Iloilo, Michael Matricciani’s side will be eager to carry that momentum into its final Group C fixture.
With a place in the Quarter Finals still to be secured, City will be determined to finish the Group Stage strongly and continue its impressive continental record.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday night’s clash.
A big test against unbeaten Beijing
City faces arguably its toughest Group Stage challenge yet, taking on a Beijing side that has already secured its place in the Quarter Finals.
The reigning Chinese Women’s Super League champions have made a perfect start to their maiden AFC Women’s Champions League campaign, recording two wins from two to sit atop Group C.
After opening their tournament with a 6-0 win over Kaya FC-Iloilo, Beijing showed their resilience on Wednesday night, coming from behind to defeat hosts PFC Nasaf 2-1.

Wang Yanwen was the hero on that occasion, scoring twice to overturn an early deficit and secure all three points for the Chinese side.
The result leaves Beijing with a maximum six points, three clear of both City and Nasaf heading into the final round of Group Stage fixtures.
For Matricciani’s side, Saturday presents an opportunity to test itself against one of the competition’s in-form teams and secure a third consecutive appearance in the Quarter Finals.
City’s attack finding its rhythm
After a frustrating opening Group Stage defeat to Nasaf, City responded in emphatic fashion against Kaya on Wednesday.
Despite dominating possession throughout the opening 45 minutes, Matricciani’s side headed into the break with the scores locked at 0-0. What followed was a remarkable second-half display, with City finding the back of the net seven times to record a commanding 7-0 win.
Kelli McGroarty, Melina Ayres and Cortnee Vine all completed braces, while Momo Hayashi also got on the scoresheet.

The performance highlighted City’s attacking depth, with goals coming from across the squad and several new recruits continuing to make their mark on the continental stage.
McGroarty was particularly impressive in her first City start, opening the scoring just two minutes after the restart before completing her brace shortly after the hour mark.
Vine also made an immediate impact from the bench, finding the back of the net twice despite only entering the contest in the second half.
With City’s attacking combinations continuing to develop, Matricciani will be hoping his side can carry that clinical finishing into Saturday’s crucial encounter.
Against a Beijing side yet to taste defeat in the competition, taking advantage of opportunities in the final third could prove decisive.
An exciting final day awaits
With everything still to play for, Saturday shapes as an exciting conclusion to the Group Stage.
City enters the final round sitting second in Group C on three points, level with Nasaf but boasting a significantly stronger goal difference following Wednesday’s seven-goal win.
While Beijing has already secured its progression to the Quarter Finals, City will be determined to join the Chinese champions in the knockout stages.

Having reached the Final in its inaugural campaign before progressing to the Semi Finals last season, Matricciani’s side will be eager to continue its strong continental record with a third consecutive Quarter Final appearance.
A win over Beijing would provide the ideal finish to the Group Stage, while other results across the competition could also play a role in determining City’s final position and Quarter Final prospects.
With three matches in just seven days, squad depth and versatility will once again be important as City looks to finish its time in Uzbekistan on a high.
What’s at stake?
While City’s immediate focus will be on securing a strong result against Beijing, there is still plenty to play for in the final round of Group Stage fixtures.
The race for top spot
City can still finish top of Group C, but will need a convincing victory over Beijing to do so.
With head-to-head results taking priority over goal difference when separating teams level on points, City would need to defeat the Chinese champions by at least three goals while scoring four goals to move above them, subject to the relevant tiebreakers.
Results such as 4-0, 4-1 or 5-1 would put City in a strong position to claim top spot and secure a home Quarter Final.
Another pathway to a home Quarter Final
Finishing top of Group C isn’t City’s only potential route to hosting a Quarter Final.
Depending on results across the remaining groups, City could also secure a home Quarter Final as the highest-ranked second-placed team with a strong win over Beijing.
With all remaining Group Stage fixtures to be played on Saturday, the final standings will determine whether knockout football returns to Melbourne.
