PREVIEW: Melbourne Victory vs Melbourne City FC

Melbourne City FC face Melbourne Victory on Saturday night in a blockbuster clash.

The Lowdown

Melbourne City FC’s Round 2 clash saw John van’t Schip’s side collected a second consecutive point in a 1-1 draw against a resilient Newcastle Jets outfit which held firm against a dominant Melbourne City FC. While the performance was worthy of more than a point, it was David Villa’s 87th minute equaliser that illustrated once again why the Spaniard is still one of the world’s most revered strikers, with his opportunistic late strike salvaging a point for the home team.

Edson Montano’s header against the run of play put the Jets ahead in the second half. However, Melbourne City FC showed character, finding the equaliser in the dying embers of the match after dominating most of the 90 minutes.

Melbourne Victory come into the clash after a 1-1 draw with Adelaide United in contests where both teams struggled to adapt to pitch conditions. A late Fahid Ben Kalfallah goal pinched a point for Victory after they put Western Sydney Wanderers to the sword in a 4-1 win in Round 1.

The Victory have recruited well in the off-season, picking up A-League talisman Bersat Berisha and strengthening their defensive line with Mattieu Delpierre.
