Melbourne City and charity partner FareShare will be encouraging fans to make donations of the carbohydrate variety at the Club’s final A-League home match on April 7.
City is teaming up with FareShare to help improve the lives of those less fortunate.
Earlier in the season and in the lead-up to Christmas, City’s A-League players, including Thomas Sorensen, Tim Cahill, Luke Brattan, Neil Kilkenny and Ivan Franjic, donned aprons in the FareShare Kitchen in Abbotsford to prepare hundreds of meals for those in need during the Christmas period.
Now the Club is helping FareShare, a non-for-profit community organisation, promote donations of rice and pasta from fans attending the match against Adelaide United.
Rice and pasta are vitally important to FareShare’s aims to prepare, cook and distribute 5000 meals a day using rescued food, but can be much harder to obtain than perishable food.
The Club is calling on its members and fans to bring unopened packets of rice and pasta to AAMI Park on match day, or to make a donation to FareShare volunteers who will be stationed on the stadium concourse and at City Square on match day.
Together we hope we can reach FareShare’s goal of ONE TONNE of rice and pasta. For every $15 FareShare receives, the charity kitchen can prepare 20 nutritious meals for people in crisis.
Pasta and rice are nutritious bulking agents and are used as a side with FareShare’s meals in order to boost the amount of meals the kitchen can give away by 23 per cent.
FareShare CEO, Marcus Godinho, said: “While the kitchen is reliant on rescued food from supermarkets and other food businesses, rice and pasta are hard to source on a regular basis but critical to our meals for people in crisis.
“Every donation from Melbourne City fans, players and staff will go a long way to solving our pasta/rice problem. If we hit our target of one tonne, City supporters will enable us to supply rice and pasta with 13,000 meals.
“We’re really calling on donations to help FareShare feed people in our city who can’t afford to put food on the table and we urgently need rice and pasta to feed hungry people.”
