Two of the league’s most prolific attackers go head to head on Saturday night as City face the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium. We look at the numbers between Nick Fitzgerald and Dimitri Petratos.
Both Fitzgerald and Petratos have made headlines this season. Fitzgerald has become one of City’s most consistent performers, while Petratos’ match-winning ability has been on display for the Jets.
Fitzgerald and Petratos have both built their performances off the back of attacking defenders at pace, reflected in the number of dribbles the pair have successfully completed with Fitzgerald leading 14-13.
Their ability to find space combined with their football smarts has seen their teammates benefit, with the pair sitting equal third in the league for assists with three apiece.
Petratos leads Fitzgerald and the league for chances created (26-12).
The numbers suggest that Fitzgerald’s speed has consistently caused problems for opposition defenders, as the City attacker has won 18 fouls this season compared to Petratos’ three.
Finding the back of the net has been an issue for Fitzgerald thus far, with the 25-year-old registering six shots on target without a goal.
In contrast, Petratos has registered eight shots on target for a return of four goals scored.
Petratos is often recognised for his spectacular goals and ability to shoot from anywhere on the park, but his passing ability is equally as important.
The Jets attacker has made 237 successful passes and is travelling at a passing accuracy percentage of 78. On the other hand, Fitzgerald has made 148 successful passes with a passing accuracy percentage of 72.2.
Fitzgerald has shown his ability to work hard defensively this season, leading Petratos in clearances (6-1) and interceptions (3-1).
Saturday night’s clash not only sets up a fierce battle between two of the league’s best attackers, but it also presents an opportunity for one team to make a statement as second on the table plays third.
Newcastle’s damaging attack has registered the most goals in the league (20), which will keep City’s stern defence on their toes.
There is no doubt that either one of these players has the ability to be the match-winner come Saturday.
