Florin Berenguer to depart City after 5 seasons

After five trophy-laden seasons in blue, French midfielder Florin Berenguer has departed Melbourne City as a three-time A-League Men Premier and one-time A-League Men Champion.

Berenguer, who joined City in 2018 from FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, would go on to make 111 appearances, scoring 10 goals and assisting a further 16.

The Frenchman wowed City fans with his vision and technical ability, quickly becoming a fan favourite, highlighted by his outstanding 2021/22 season that put him in the conversation as one of the best players in the league.

He was a vital cog in City’s attack that season, scoring 5 goals and assisting 4 more, but his impact couldn’t be justified simply by the numbers.

Berenguer would claim 3 individual honours at the end of season awards; Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year (as voted by his teammates) and the Etihad Members’ Player of the Year.

The Frenchman’s 111 appearances see him sit fourth on the all-time list for City, behind Club legends Scott Jamieson, Curtis Good and Jamie Maclaren.
