Melbourne City FC is excited to announce the signing of 22-year-old midfielder, Laura Hughes, for the upcoming A-League Women’s season.
Born and raised in the nation’s capital, Hughes makes the move to Melbourne following seven seasons with her hometown club, Canberra United.
In December 2016, Hughes made her professional debut as a 15-year-old, becoming a more regular member of the Canberra United squad in the 2018/19 season.
The dynamic midfielder has made 62 A-League Women’s appearances and scored three goals, bringing a wealth of senior experience to City’s squad despite her young age.
There will be some familiar faces that greet Hughes when she starts pre-season training, having already played alongside City’s Holly McNamara, Bryleeh Henry and Kaitlyn Torpey with the Australian U23s.
Laura Hughes said:
“I’m really excited to be joining Melbourne City for this upcoming A-League season. It’s a great opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone in order to grow and challenge myself.
I’m looking forward to working with Dario and in the professional environment that Melbourne City has to offer. The club has a great history of success and quality and I hope I can add to that.
“I want to compete for finals football and hope that we can lift a trophy at the end of the season. I’m really keen to get started, to meet the City fans and for our first game against Wellington.”
A-League Women’s Head Coach, Dario Vidosic, said:
“Laura is a player we’ve been watching for a while now and we are really excited to welcome her to Melbourne.
“She’s a quality midfielder and already has years of experience in the competition, so we expect her to play a big role for us this coming season.
“Laura’s qualities both on and off the ball suit our style of play well, and we can’t wait to work with her and see her develop further as a player here at Melbourne City.”
