VIDOSIC: It’s been a pleasing start

Melbourne City A-League Women’s Head Coach, Dario Vidosic, has praised his team’s performance following City’s 2-1 win over Canberra United at AAMI Park on Saturday afternoon.

Rhianna Pollicina’s brace saw City continue their perfect start to the season ahead of the international break.

The attacking midfielder found the opener in the 26th minute following a brilliant build up in the first-half, before doubling City’s lead from the penalty spot at the beginning of the second period. Canberra United pegged one back through Michelle Heyman with half an hour to play.

“Overall, we controlled the game very well,” Vidosic said. “It could’ve been over well before they scored a goal, but it just shows that you have to be ready for 90 minutes, otherwise we could be thinking how did we drop points today.”

“It was a really pleasing performance and a pleasing result which is good to build on.”

In Vidosic’s first full season in charge, the manager has applauded his team’s ability to adapt and build on his style of play.

“It’s going to be a work in progress, but it’s been really pleasing, and they deserve all the credit with how much they’ve taken everything on and how they’ve performed,” he said. “That’s all down to them.”

Vidosic opened up on encouraging his players to push forwards, and in particular how he has helped guide Rhianna Pollicina since she first joined the Club.

When she [Pollicina] first came to the Club I was the assistant and worked closely with her, observed her and just said just get in the box,” Vidosic explained.

“Get in the box, that’s where the goals are scored from so the last two seasons, she’s started to put herself in really dangerous positions. With her quality and how she can hold the ball up, she just needs to go in the box.”

“That’s what we want, we want a lot of numbers to get forward in dangerous positions and she’s one of them.”

City will return to action following the international break when the team take on Western United at City Vista Reserve on Sunday 5 November.
