Melbourne City’s Young Matildas trio Daniela Galic, Tijan McKenna and Naomi Chinnama have won the bronze medal at the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2024™.
The Young Matildas secured bronze with a 1-0 victory over Korea Republic in the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday.
City youngsters Galic and Chinnama were named in the starting XI, as Galic continued her strong tournament, pulling the strings in the heart of midfield during the first period.
It took until the 79th minute for the Young Matildas to break the deadlock, as Lara Gooch used her pace to latch onto a through ball and poke Australia in front.
The bronze medal equals Australia’s best-ever finish in the competition, which was achieved back in 2006.
Despite missing out on the Final, it was a tournament to be proud of for the Young Matildas who secured their place at the upcoming FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024™ when they reached the semi-final of the tournament.
Galic, McKenna and Chinnama now return to Melbourne ahead of City’s last home fixture in the regular season this weekend.
