City eyes Premiers Plate defence with signing of Venezuelan international

Melbourne City FC is delighted to announce the signing of Venezuelan international, Mariana Speckmaier, on a two-year deal that will see her remain at the Club until at least the conclusion of 2025/26 A-League Women’s season.

The 26-year-old made her professional debut for the Washington Spirit in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), before stints in Iceland with Valur and most recently with the Wellington Phoenix.

Speckmaier’s attacking prowess, speed and technical ability provides a huge boost to City’s attacking stocks as the reigning Premiers embark on their inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League campaign.

One of the A-Leagues most lethal attackers last season, the Venezuelan took out Wellington’s Golden Boot and was voted as their Women’s Player of the Year by Media.

As City eyes a Premiership defence in the 2024/25 season, Speckmaier’s inclusion marks the side’s first new signing ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Head Coach, Dario Vidosic, expressed his delight with Speckmaier joining the squad.

“Mariana is a versatile attacker with international experience and her inclusion will significantly bolster our team.

“We all saw firsthand her qualities in the league last season, and we very much believe that she’s a perfect fit for us as we look forward to both the A-League Women’s season and the AFC Women’s Champions League.”

Speaking of her move to City, Mariana Speckmaier shared her excitement.

“I am thrilled to be joining Melbourne City. The opportunity to join a Club of City’s professionalism and play an exciting brand of football is one that I couldn’t turn down.

“With the very first AFC Champions League this season, I can’t wait to contribute to the team’s success, meet my new teammates and begin pre-season training.”
