Melbourne City FC is excited to secure the long-term future of highly regarded Young Socceroo, 17-year-old Medin Memeti, on a three-year deal with an option for a further season.
Memeti, a talented young attacker with a strong sense for goal, joins a long list of talented players to progress through the ranks in City’s Academy and earn a professional contract.
A powerful player with a quick turn of pace, Memeti has attributes that allow him to play several roles in attack. Whether he’s holding the ball up as a classic number 9, making runs in behind, or even out wide as a winger, Memeti’s finishing is what sets him apart.
He can finish from long range, get in the right positions to score from close range, as well as be an ariel threat making him an unpredictable player to mark for opposition defenders.
The youngster, who began the 2024 VPL1 season as a 16-year-old, has been in red-hot form for Melbourne City’s most senior Academy side, scoring nine goals across 15 appearances.
In 2022, Memeti became one of the first South East-based talents to join City’s Academy following the Club’s move to Casey Fields, and it didn’t take long for him to showcase his potential.
At just 15 years of age, Memeti would make his debut for City’s senior Academy team in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.
With his side down 2-0 to Brunswick Juventus, Memeti’s number was called upon with 30 minutes left to play, and his performance did not disappoint.
Memeti’s impact was almost instantaneous, as the young attacker scored just three minutes after coming into the game. With his confidence brimming, Memeti would go on to score twice more, sealing his hat-trick and a thrilling 3-2 comeback win.
Following a string of impressive performances for City’s senior Academy side, Memeti earned his senior City debut in the 2023 Australia Cup Quarter Final, coming on as a substitute during a 2-1 win over MetroStars.
With his signing, Memeti joins fellow Young Socceroos Max Caputo and Arion Sulemani in City’s senior men’s squad, further strengthening an already dynamic group of young attackers.
Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, spoke highly of Memeti’s development over the past two years.“Medin is an exciting young prospect and we’re thrilled to have him commit his long-term future to City. He joins an already exciting group of young attackers in our squad.
“He possesses the right mentality and technical abilities needed to be a City player, so we believe that he has a bright future ahead of him.
“He’s in a fantastic environment with all the resources available to him to realise his potential, and we’re looking forward to seeing him develop over the next few seasons.”
Melbourne City Academy Senior Manager, Simon Zappia, reflected on Memeti’s progression from the City Academy to the A-League Men’s team.
“Medin has a unique story, he was one of the first signings we made in the Academy after moving to Casey Fields from his junior club, Dandenong Thunder.
“After joining our U16’s as a 14-year-old, we saw a rapid rise in his development, and he progressed through the Academy to train with our A-League team within 18 months. Medin has showed great resilience to bounce back from a few setbacks and he’s built some strong consistency in the VPL.
“I’m really proud to see the progress he’s made, and he thoroughly deserves this opportunity.”
Medin Memeti opened up on signing his first professional contract with Melbourne City.
“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to sign my first professional contract with my local club, Melbourne City.
“It’s been something I’ve been looking forward to and I’ve been working hard to get to this point. I’m very happy but I also know this is just the beginning and I can’t wait to get back to work and learn from the senior players and the coaches.”
