City signs Argentinian defender

Melbourne City FC is pleased to announce the signing of Argentinian defender Germán Ferreyra on a two-year deal, tying him to the Club through to the end of the 2025/26 season.

Ferreyra adds crucial versatility and depth to Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar’s team, with the 28-year-old capable of playing in multiple positions across defence and midfield.

Known for his aggressive defending and quality forward passes, he brings both experience and adaptability to the squad.

Progressing through the youth ranks at Velez Sarsfield in Argentina, Ferreyra would go on to represent the national team at both the U-17 and U-20 level, where he netted twice at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

His professional career has taken him from Argentina to Uruguay, and most recently to Russia with Enisey Krasnoyarsk. During his time in Krasnoyarsk, Ferreyra made 85 appearances, scoring four goals and assisting a further four.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, spoke to the importance of increasing depth in defence.

“Germán’s versatility and style of play make him an exciting addition to our squad, and a player that I think the fans will really enjoy watching play.

“Being able to play across numerous positions enhances our tactical options, and his aggressive defending and attacking mindset brings an important dynamic to our team.

“He’s a physical, hard-working defender, and a player that I don’t think will take long to adapt to our style of play.”

After signing with City, Germán Ferreyra was quick to express his delight at the opportunity to play in Australia.

“I am so happy to be joining Melbourne City. They’re a Club who have won a lot of trophies in recent times and we share the same ambition for success, so it is an exciting opportunity for me.

“I’ve heard many good things about the lifestyle in Melbourne, and the facilities at the Club look amazing.

“I can’t wait to get started, meet my new teammates, the coaches and of course, the City fans. I’m committed to giving my all to help the team achieve more success on the pitch.”
