Melbourne City FC is excited to announce the contract extensions of Laura Hughes, Karly Roestbakken and Bryleeh Henry, who have all recommitted to the Club for the next two seasons.
The trio were instrumental in City’s success last season, culminating in the team lifting the 2023/24 A-League Women’s Premiers Plate, and their re-signings are a huge boost as the team embarks on the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League competition.
In her debut season at the Club, Hughes quickly established herself as a crucial figure, earning City’s coveted Player of the Year award after a stellar season in which she featured in every match of the campaign.
The 23-year-old midfielder’s vision, work ethic and control in midfield were vital to the team’s success.
Like Hughes, Roestbakken has put pen to paper to extend her time at City until at least the end of the 2025/26 season. With two seasons already under her belt, the 23-year-old has made 20 appearances for City since joining the Club in October 2022 – 16 of those coming during the 2023/24 campaign.
After overcoming an injury that limited her gametime during her first season in City colours, Roestbakken emerged as a key part of City’s Premiership-wining squad and was recognised for her commitment with the inaugural Melissa Barbieri award.
Henry joins Hughes and Roestbakken to re-commit to the Club for the next two years. The versatile 21-year-old has made 38 appearances for City across two seasons and became an important figure in the Club’s strong finish to the 2023/24 campaign after a mid-season switch to right back.
Following the conclusion of the season, Henry joined Hughes in representing Australia’s U23 side at the Four Nations Tournament in Sweden.
Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, spoke about the importance of re-signing the Premiers Plate-winning trio.
“We’re absolutely delighted to have Laura, Karly and Bryleeh re-sign with the Club. Each player brings unique qualities and talent to our squad.
“Laura’s consistency in the middle of the park, Karly’s defensive strengths and composure, and Bryleeh’s versatility and athleticism have been critical to our success. Their commitment to the team sets a strong foundation as we prepare for the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League and upcoming A-League Women’s season.”
It was a memorable first season in City colours for Laura Hughes who can’t wait to continue her journey at the Club.
“My first season at City was unforgettable and I’m so proud of what we were able to achieve together as a team.
“Putting pen to paper was a no brainer, the professionalism of the Club and the style of play here is like no other, and I can’t wait to continue developing my game as we strive for more success.”
Karly Roestbakken shared her excitement about extending her stay at City.
“I’ve loved my time at City so far and I’m incredibly grateful to continue my football journey here. The support of the Club, the staff and the City fans during my time here has been amazing.
“We enjoyed great success last season and with this talented group of girls, I can’t wait to continue building on that as we head into an exciting campaign.”
Bryleeh Henry also commented on her commitment to the Club.
“I’m super excited to be staying at City, a Club that has the professional full-time set up that you need to be a top-class player. The support and development that I’ve received from the players, staff and Club have been instrumental in my growth as a player and I want to keep building on that.
“I can’t wait to continue playing City’s unique brand of football whilst playing alongside a special group of girls. I want to become a top-class player and City is the place for me to do that. This season can’t come any quicker and I’m especially excited for our first AFC Women’s Champions League.”
