Spanish goalkeeper joins City

Melbourne City FC is pleased to secure the signature of Spanish goalkeeper, Malena Mieres, who has signed a one-year deal with the Club.

Known for her exceptional shot-stopping and proficiency with her feet, the 24-year-old joins City after having spent the last four years in Liga F with Eibar and Real Betis.

The now 24-year-old has represented Spain at youth international level and was part of its UEFA U19 Championship-winning squad in 2018. Mieres was also called up to Spain’s U23 squad earlier this year for a pair of friendlies against England and Norway.

She becomes the Club’s second international signing of the off-season following the arrival of Venezuelan striker Mariana Speckmaier as City continues to build towards the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, spoke to the qualities that Malena will bring.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Malena to Melbourne City. A talented shot-stopper, Malena’s distribution is also key, making her an ideal fit for our style of play.

“With the AFC Women’s Champions League commencing in October, Malena brings a wealth of experience after spending the past four seasons in Spain’s top division.”

Malena Mieres said she was looking forward to a new challenge in Melbourne this season.

“I’m really excited to be joining Melbourne City and I can’t wait to move to Australia and meet my new teammates.

“I’ve heard great things about the Club and the A-League, so I’m looking forward to what is a fantastic new challenge for me.

“City are an ambitious club, and I’ll be doing everything I can to help the team defend their league title.”
