Melbourne City FC is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Matricciani as the Head Coach of the Club’s Women’s team ahead of the 2024/25 season.
With a wealth of coaching experience, Matricciani joins City after a successful seven-year tenure in South Australia’s National Premier League, where he held roles as both Head Coach and Technical Director at Adelaide City and Campbelltown City, winning the 2024 Federation Cup with the latter.
Prior to his stints in the National Premier League, the 38-year-old spent three years leading South Australia’s most exciting young talent as Head Coach of Football SA NTC Girls team, where he was recognised with the WNPL Coach of the Year award in 2018.
Taking the reins at City, Matricciani returns to the A-League Women’s competition, having previously served as Senior Assistant Coach at Adelaide United.
With pre-season commencing in the first week of September, Matricciani’s first opportunity to stamp his mark will come in Thailand, with City set to take part in the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League Group Stage in late October.
Matricciani will be joined in his coaching team by existing Women’s Goalkeeper Coach, Ben Morella, and Women’s Assistant Coach, Peter Kofinas.
Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, expressed his confidence in the appointment of Matricciani.
“Michael is someone who we have had our eyes on for a very long time, he is a fantastic young coach who truly believes in the way we want to play football and has demonstrated this with his teams in recent years.
“After Dario’s departure, and with an important Champions League campaign on the horizon, it was vital that we found the right coach to lead this exciting team forward. Michael brings years of experience and knowledge, and we believe he will continue to build on our winning culture.”
“I believe that after the signings we’ve made and with Michael’s appointment, we are in a great position to challenge for silverware both in Asia and back home domestically.
Women’s Head Coach, Michael Matricciani, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity at City.
“I’ve long been an admirer of City’s football philosophy and style of play. As soon as the opportunity to join the Club was presented to me, I jumped at it straight away.
“Dario has done such a fantastic job with the squad over the last two years and I’m excited for the challenge to continue that success.
“My eyes are firmly on day one of pre-season and ensuring we have the best preparation possible for our AWCL campaign.”
