ALW PREVIEW: Sydney v City

In the team’s opening game of 2025, City will take on Sydney FC at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday’s clash will be City’s third match in nine days as Michael Matricciani’s squad look to extend their unbeaten start to the season.

Ahead of the game, we take a look at some of the key talking points.

NEW YEAR, SAME CITY?

City enters 2025 with an impressive start to the season – Matricciani’s side is the only team in the A-League Women’s competition who remain unbeaten.

After a strong showing in the first half of the campaign, City will look to carry that momentum into the new year.

With a blend of seasoned experience and talented youngsters, City have been impressive without hitting their best form just yet.

There’d be no better way to start the new year than returning to Melbourne with the three points in hand.

ARCH RIVALS

There’s no love lost when City take on Sydney FC. The rivalry is fierce and it brings out the best in both teams.

Earlier this season, the two sides shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Jubilee Stadium during Unite Round, and City will be determined to claim all three points this time around.

It’s the reigning Premiers against the reigning Champions, and it’s set to be a cracking content of high intensity and fierce competition.

BOUNCING BACK IN ATTACK

Although City remain the only unbeaten team, Matricciani’s side will be looking to bounce back in attack following a frustrating afternoon in Gosford on New Year’s Eve.

Despite being the dominant side against the Mariners, City were unable to find the back of the net and were forced to settle for a share of the points.

Boasting an attacking third that includes the likes of Mariana Speckmaier, Lourdes Bosch, Leticia McKenna and Rhianna Pollicina, City are spoiled for choice when it comes to players who can find the back of the net as the team looks to respond in the final third.

Holly McNamara’s ability to change the game off the bench was again on display against Central Coast, with the star attacker earning two penalties. With each game, she’s looking more and more dangerous and there’s no doubt Sydney’s defence will need to be at their best to stop her.
