ALW PREVIEW: Brisbane v City

It’s a quick turnaround for our Women’s squad as we shift focus back to the Ninja A-League following Sunday’s AFC Women’s Champions League win.

The business end of the season is officially here, with just four games remaining before finals — and it all begins with a crucial clash against Brisbane Roar on Wednesday night.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the midweek matchup:

Final Push for the Premiers Plate

Our hunt for back-to-back Premiers Plates is heating up, with City still sitting undefeated and holding a narrow two-point lead over Melbourne Victory.

With just four matches remaining, every point is vital in maintaining our place at the top of the table.

Confidence will be high after Sunday’s impressive 3-0 win in the AWCL Quarter Final, where both Holly McNamara and Mariana Speckmaier found the back of the net.

However, City knows it can’t afford any complacency, with the margin at the top razor-thin.

A strong result in Brisbane would be the perfect start to the final stretch as we continue to push for silverware.

A Busy Week Continues

Just days after the historic Champions League victory, City is straight back into action.

Following Wednesday’s clash in Brisbane, the squad will remain on the road for Sunday’s meeting with Wellington Phoenix.

Head Coach Michael Matricciani flagged post-match on Sunday that an extended squad would travel for this two-game road trip, providing flexibility and the potential for squad rotation.

With depth across the pitch, City has plenty of options to keep players fresh across the demanding schedule.

While it’s a hectic week, the upcoming international break after Sunday’s fixture will offer a welcome chance for recovery. Expect City to leave everything on the pitch as we chase maximum points in these fixtures.

Goals Aplenty

Wednesday night’s matchup will feature the two highest-scoring sides in the league, promising plenty of action in front of goal. Despite City’s strong form, Brisbane remains a threat, boasting plenty of attacking firepower.

However, the Roar’s recent results have been less than ideal. After starting the season strongly, Brisbane has hit a rough patch, going winless in their last five matches and claiming just one victory from their previous nine.

City fans will have fond memories of the last time we faced Brisbane back in January. Leticia McKenna was the star of the show, netting twice in the opening 10 minutes in a match that finished 2-0 in our favour.

With both teams eager to find the net and the three points crucial for different reasons, expect another entertaining contest under the lights at Perry Park.
