INVINCIBLES: Melbourne City create history with unforgettable campaign

Melbourne City etched their name into the annals of Australian football with a commanding 5-1 win over Perth Glory, sealing the Premiers Plate and becoming the first team in A-League Women’s history to complete a full home-and-away season undefeated.

City’s success wasn’t just a title win, but the crowning moment of a historic campaign. In remaining unbeaten throughout the regular season, the side shattered league records and rewrote Club history.

Across 23 games, City recorded 16 wins, seven draws, and zero losses. Possessing the league’s most lethal attack, Michael Matricciani’s side scored a staggering 56 goals.

In his debut season at the helm, Matricciani has guided his team to multiple milestones. City broke the A-League Women’s record for most games unbeaten, set a new Club record, and became the first team to go invincible across an entire home-and-away campaign.

The 2024/25 squad now joins City’s legendary “Invincibles” from the 2015/16 and 2019/20 seasons in achieving this remarkable feat. Captain Rebekah Stott and defender Tyla-Jay Vlajnic have been part of all three squads.

Following the match, Michael Matricciani said: “Look, words can’t describe the feelings that are going through, my body at the moment.”

“I’m just super proud. From day one, the Club has welcomed me. The players have welcomed me. It’s been an absolute pleasure coaching them so far.

One trophy down and to go undefeated, you know, I couldn’t have ever imagined that. But, it’s a true testament to the determination and the quality and the focus of these girls.”

City’s focus now shifts to the A-League Women’s Final Series before eyeing a historic AFC Women’s Champions League Semi Final in May.
