Melbourne City defender Kai Trewin says the excitement is building as his side prepares for Saturday night’s highly-anticipated Grand Final with arch-rivals Melbourne Victory at a sold-out AAMI Park.
Following an impressive two-legged Semi-Final win over Western United, Trewin revealed the magnitude of a home Grand Final hit him almost instantly.
“It’s pretty exciting, to be honest,” Trewin said. “You know, as soon as the game ended on Saturday, I was already getting excited for this week.”

“The derbies are the biggest games of the year for us and for a Grand Final to be at AAMI Park, a packed out AAMI Park against Victory, it doesn’t really get much better than that.”
City’s path to the decider has been anything but straightforward, navigating injuries to key players throughout the season to reach the last dance. Trewin reflected on the journey and the strength of his team.
“It’s been a really long season, we’ve worked so hard and to get to this point, you know, it was a great feeling and a little bit of relief, to be honest,” he said.
“We got through those two games against Western who are a tough opponent and got ourselves in the Grand Final.”
“It honestly feels like every player has played a part… Benny Mazzeo scored a goal against Brisbane for us to win. Arion [Sulemani] got an assist, and they’re not even in the squad anymore. But they are with us, you know, and everyone that’s been called upon has done a job and that sort of summed up our year, I would say.”
With the squad riding a strong run of form, Trewin is itching to get our there in what promises to be an unforgettable occasion.
“We’re just focused on what we can control,” he said. “We’ve put a lot of good performances together and just keeping that momentum going… focusing on what we can do and what we can control.”

“You walk out to the pitch and you see both ends singing… that environment, it is hostile, like you said, and it definitely just makes the game more enjoyable I’d say.”
