Jimmy Jeggo announces retirement from professional football

Melbourne City midfielder Jimmy Jeggo has announced his retirement from professional football, drawing the curtain on a decorated 14-year career.

Born in Vienna, Austria, Jeggo moved to Melbourne at age 10 and began his professional journey in his adopted hometown in 2011. He soon made his mark at Adelaide United, lifting the 2014 FFA Cup and earning A-League Footballer of the Year honours in the 2014/15 season.

His standout performances earned him a move to Europe, beginning with Austria’s Sturm Graz, where he enjoyed a successful spell that included winning the Austrian Cup in 2018.

Later that same year, Jeggo made his international debut for the Socceroos against Lebanon, going on to earn 15 senior caps for Australia.

Over the next eight years, he built an impressive career abroad, playing in Austria, Greece, Belgium and Scotland, before returning home in January 2024 to sign with Melbourne City.

He made 19 appearances in City colours, contributing to a successful Championship-winning campaign in 2024/25.

While an Achilles injury limited his on-field minutes late in this season, Jeggo remained an influential voice in the squad, bringing leadership, experience, and a team-first mindset that helped guide the Club to Grand Final glory.

He retires with more than 300 professional appearances and a fitting final chapter: lifting silverware at home, surrounded by family and friends.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said:

“Jimmy is someone I’ve known for many years and has always carried himself as the ultimate professional, both on and off the pitch.

“Although injury restricted his time on the field this season, his leadership and experience were invaluable within the group and played a key role in our Championship success.

“On behalf of everyone at Melbourne City, I’d like to congratulate Jimmy on a fantastic career. He’s an exemplary leader and person – exactly the type of character we want around our environment. We’re looking forward to working with him in a new capacity as he transitions into the next phase of his football journey.”

Jimmy Jeggo said:

“After a challenging period with injury, I’ve made the difficult decision to retire from professional football. I feel incredibly fortunate that my career has given me so many unforgettable moments and the chance to meet so many amazing people.

“I owe so much to so many for the role they’ve played in my journey, and I’m deeply grateful for the support I’ve received and the moments I’ve shared with friends, family, coaches, and teammates.

“Returning home to Melbourne with City has been the perfect place to finish my playing career, and where I now look forward to starting the next chapter of my footballing journey.”
