LOCKED IN: McKenna eyes more history after breakout campaign

Leticia McKenna isn’t one to get caught up in the noise. Not about going undefeated, not about goal tallies, not even about topping 100 senior appearances at just 22.

But ask her how it felt when City became invincible, clinched back-to-back Premiers Plates, and came within touching distance of a continental crown, and you start to see the pride behind her usually understated tone.

“We spoke about it [going unbeaten] after a few games,” she told Talking Bullship, the official podcast of Melbourne City.

“Like, how cool would it be to do what the girls did a few years ago? That team was amazing. But for us to do it over a full season… yeah, there was just so much belief in the squad.”

That belief has led McKenna to commit to another two years at City, a Club she calls the perfect place to grow and challenge herself.

She was a constant in City’s midfield this season, featuring in all 31 matches across domestic and AFC Women’s Champions League competitions. Her six goals were a personal best, but it was her consistency and maturity on the ball that stood out most.

Reflecting on the season that was, McKenna said: “It was never like, ‘Oh, we’re at 12 games now’ or anything like that.”

“We just rocked up every week, focused on the game in front of us. It was never about protecting the streak, just about getting better, week by week. And we did it.

“Last season was an important one on both a personal and team-level, and I can’t wait to help this team achieve even more success in the seasons ahead.”

With 86 appearances in City blue, McKenna now trails only Rebekah Stott on the Club’s all-time Women’s appearance list, not bad for a Perth teenager who once got picked up from school by Sam Kerr.

“I was 14 when I first trained with the Perth Glory women’s team,” McKenna said. “Sam Kerr used to pick me up from school and drop me at training. She’s the reason I got there on time!”
