Dual Championship-winner returns to Europe

After lighting up the A-League and playing a key role in some of the Club’s biggest moments, Marco Tilio’s time at Melbourne City has come to an end – with the winger returning to Europe following the conclusion of his loan from Celtic FC.

Tilio first joined Melbourne City in 2020 and spent three standout seasons at the Club, winning three Premiers Plates and one Championship, before earning a then-record Australian transfer to Celtic FC.

He returned on loan in 2024, adding another chapter to his legacy as one of City’s most influential players. In total, he made 110 appearances in City blue and ranks third on the Club’s all-time A-League Men’s goalscorers list.

A fan favourite known for his creativity, pace, and big-game moments, Tilio played a starring role in the Club’s 2025 Grand Final win over fierce rivals Melbourne Victory – his second Championship triumph in City blue.

He was also an integral part of the team’s record-breaking run of three consecutive Premierships, emerging as one of the A-League’s most exciting attacking talents and earning national team recognition along the way.

Tilio’s strong form during his return to City saw him recalled to the Socceroos squad in June 2025, making his 10th international appearance in a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said:

“Marco has been a tremendous player for our Club – not just for what he’s produced on the pitch, but also for the way he’s conducted himself as a professional.

“He’s played a major role across two successful stints with City, and we’ve all enjoyed watching him develop into one of the country’s brightest attacking talents.

“While we were keen to extend his stay and continued discussions with Celtic, we fully support Marco’s ambition to once again challenge himself in Europe.

“We thank him for everything he’s contributed to Melbourne City and wish him every success in the next stage of his career.”
