Academy talent returns to Melbourne City

Melbourne City FC is pleased to confirm the return of 16-year-old defender Besian Kutleshi.

Kutleshi spent two years in City’s Academy from 2022 to 2024 and after a season away, will once again pull on the City blue after signing a three-year contract with an option for a further two years.

The Joeys international made history at City in February 2024 when, at just 14 years old, he became the youngest player ever to debut for the Club’s VPL1 side.

Since then, he has continued to develop rapidly, earning international recognition with Australia’s U17s and making his professional debut earlier this year.

A commanding presence at the back, Kutleshi is strong in the air and comfortable on the ball, with the ability to carry forward and play out from defence – qualities that make him well-suited to City’s style.

Kutleshi has already commenced training with Aurelio Vidmar’s squad, adding further depth and potential to City’s defensive options alongside fellow young Australians Liam Bonetig and Jayden Necovski.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said:

“We’re really pleased to have Besian returning to the Club.

“He’s a talented young defender who has already achieved a lot at his age, and with the right work ethic and mindset, he has all the tools to develop into a very good player for us in the years ahead.”

Besian Kutleshi said:

“I’m really grateful for the opportunity to return to Melbourne City.

“This Club has been such a big part of my development, and I know it’s the best place for me to keep improving as a player.

“I’ll be working hard every day in training to learn from the coaches and experienced players around me, and I’m excited to keep growing my game and push for opportunities this season.”
