Breakout 15-year-old star signs first professional contract

Melbourne City FC is delighted to announce that 15-year-old winger, Akeem Gerald, has signed his first professional contract with the Club.

The exciting young talent has committed to a three-year deal through to the end of the 2027/28 season, with an option to extend for a further two years.

Despite only celebrating his 15th birthday earlier this year, Gerald has already caught the eye with a breakout campaign at VPL1 level. Since joining City’s Academy in 2022, he has risen rapidly through the ranks and continued to impress with each step in his development.

His attacking flair and pace were on full display last season, featuring across three different age groups and amassing an incredible 45 goal contributions. A regular contender in City’s Academy Goal of the Week, Gerald claimed the honour four times in 2024.

A dynamic and skilful wide player, he became the youngest goalscorer in City’s Youth Team history when he found the net in just his second VPL1 appearance earlier this year.

Known for his blistering speed, technical quality and fearless 1v1 ability, Gerald has also added maturity to his defensive work – an important element of City’s high-tempo style of play.

He made further history in July, debuting in City’s Australia Cup Round of 32 clash and becoming the youngest Men’s player to represent the Club.

Melbourne City FC Senior Academy Manager, Simon Zappia, said:

“Akeem’s dedication since joining our Academy has been outstanding, and it’s been no surprise to see him develop so quickly.

“To play such an important role in our Youth Team achieving promotion at just 15 years old is remarkable and seeing him make his first-team debut was a proud moment for everyone in the Academy.

“If he continues to apply himself with the same work rate and commitment, I have no doubt he has the potential to enjoy a fantastic career at the highest level.”

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said:

“What Akeem has achieved at just 15 years old is remarkable and speaks volumes about both his talent and his dedication to improving.

“He’s an exciting winger with tremendous potential, and now with the support of a professional environment around him, we believe he can continue to progress quickly.

“We’re excited to watch him take the next steps in his football journey here at City.”

Akeem Gerald said:

“Signing my first professional contract is a dream come true and a really proud moment for me and my family.

“I’m so grateful to everyone at the Club who has supported me on and off the pitch and helped me get to this point.

“I’ve already learnt so much in the Academy, but I know the hard work is only just beginning. I’m ready for the challenge and can’t wait to keep improving.”
