TWINNING PROJECT: Using football to support the mental and physical health of inmates in Victorian prisons

City in the Community (CitC) is proud to be delivering the internationally renowned Twinning Project across Melbourne, using the power of football to support rehabilitation of prisoners and create safer communities.

First launched in the United Kingdom in 2018, the program connects professional football clubs with correctional facilities around the world. Its goal is to prepare prisoners for successful reintegration into society and, in turn, reduce reoffending rates.

At its heart, the program goes beyond football. While participants engage in the game and connect with Melbourne City, they also develop essential life skills in teamwork, leadership, respectful relationships, and both mental and physical wellbeing.

In Melbourne, the project is driven by participants of CitC’s highly successful Young Leaders Program, with additional support from Club staff and players across our A-League Men’s, A-League Women’s, and Powerchair teams. Their involvement ensures that participants benefit from role models who understand the transformative power of sport, both on and off the pitch.

Melbourne City is proud to be the first club in Australia to deliver the Twinning Project.

Following its strong impact on participants, the program has now received a funding boost from the FIFA Foundation, helping to expand its reach and further support offenders as they transition back into the community.

By teaching practical skills, providing mentorship, and creating positive connections through football, the Twinning Project is offering young offenders the tools they need to build brighter futures and making a difference for the wider community.
