From Bendigo to the A-Leagues: Academy graduate signs first professional contract

Melbourne City FC is pleased to announce the signing of Academy graduate Ryan Kalms for the upcoming A-League Men’s season.

Kalms first joined City’s Academy as a 13-year-old in 2019, beginning a journey built on commitment and resilience. For five years, the defender and his family travelled from Bendigo to Melbourne for every training session and game, before relocating in 2024 to complete his VCE and continue his football development.

A strong central defender with excellent ball-playing ability, Kalms has been a consistent standout at VPL1 level.

His biggest moment though came in a role he hadn’t played since he was a junior, pushed into attack for City’s Promotion Playoffs and delivering four goals across two games – before also converting in the decisive shootout to help secure promotion to the NPL.

The 19-year-old also represented the Joeys earlier in his career and already has a senior debut to his name, impressing across 90 minutes in City’s Australia Cup Round of 32 clash in July.

He has since been named on the bench for both of the Club’s opening AFC Champions League Elite fixtures as he continues to press for further senior opportunities.

Senior Academy Manager, Simon Zappia, said:

“Throughout his time in the Academy, Ryan has been a role model to his peers.

“The dedication shown by him and his family has been outstanding, and it’s a great success story of what can be achieved with the right support and mindset.

“He’s developed into a leader on and off the pitch, and we’re excited to see him take this next step with the first team.”

Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said:

“Ryan has spent six years in our Academy system, and he’s developed into exactly the type of player and person we want representing Melbourne City.

“He showed his quality on debut in the Australia Cup and his ability to step up in big moments has been clear, whether in defence or in the playoff run with the Youth Team.

“With his work ethic and maturity, we believe he’s ready to push for senior minutes and continue growing as a professional.”

Ryan Kalms said:

“Signing my first professional contract with Melbourne City is a really special moment for me and my family.

“The Academy has been such an important part of my football journey, and I’m grateful to all of my coaches, teammates and staff who’ve supported me along the way.

“While I’m proud of this achievement, I know the hard work is only just beginning, and I’ll be doing everything I can to keep improving and contribute to the first team this season.”
