Captain Fantastic: Behich crowned 2025 PFA Men’s Footballer of the Year

Melbourne City captain Aziz Behich has capped off a remarkable 2024/25 season by being voted the PFA Men’s Footballer of the Year.

Voted on by his fellow professionals, the prestigious award recognises the standout Australian male footballer of the past year, a fitting honour for Behich after leading City to Championship glory and continuing to shine on the international stage.

It was a season to remember for the 34-year-old fullback, who captained City to its second A-League Men’s Championship in the first-ever Melbourne Derby Grand Final.

Leading a youthful and evolving squad, Behich’s influence extended far beyond his performances on the pitch. His leadership, professionalism and competitive edge set the standard throughout a campaign that saw City overcome adversity to once again reach the summit of Australian football.

On the international front, Behich was a mainstay in the Socceroos setup, with his unforgettable 90th-minute winner against Japan proving crucial in securing Australia’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A foundation player from the Club’s inaugural squad back in 2010, Behich’s journey has come full circle – from a local fan favourite to national leader and now the PFA’s top male player in Australian football.

Speaking on the recognition, Behich said he was humbled to receive the award from his peers.

“It’s an honour to be recognised by your peers – the people who know what it takes to play at the top level – and I’m extremely grateful to receive this award,” Behich said.

“I’m proud of what we achieved as a Club this past season. It was a special group, and to be able to lead Melbourne City to a Championship, especially in a Derby Grand Final, is something I’ll never forget.”

Behich joins an elite group of Melbourne City players to have claimed the PFA Men’s Footballer of the Year, alongside Aaron Mooy (2015) and Jamie Maclaren (2021).
