Melbourne City will round out our Group Stage campaign in Vietnam on Wednesday night with our sternest test yet, facing hosts Ho Chi Minh City in a clash that will decide top spot in Group A.
Michael Matricciani’s side arrives full of momentum after back-to-back dominant wins, including a record-breaking victory on Sunday. But with both teams perfect across the opening two matchdays, the stakes are set to rise sharply as City looks to secure a home quarter-final for the second straight year.
Here are the key talking points ahead of Wednesday’s decisive fixture.
Home Quarter Final on the line
For City, the equation is simple: avoid defeat on Wednesday night and a home Quarter Final is locked in for the second consecutive season. Supporters will remember just how valuable that advantage proved last year, when we returned home and convincingly dispatched Taichung Blue Whale 3-0 to advance to the Semi Finals.
City has certainly earned the position we now find ourselves in. Sunday night’s 7-0 win over Stallion Laguna was not only comprehensive, but officially the biggest victory in the history of the Club’s Women’s team – an effort that underlined the quality, depth and potent attacking rhythm Matricciani’s squad has carried into this continental campaign.
Ho Chi Minh City, however, looms as a significant step up. The hosts have also taken maximum points from their first two fixtures, recording more modest but hard-fought wins over Lion City Sailors (2-0) and Stallion Laguna (1-0). With the home crowd behind them and an opportunity to claim top spot, they will undoubtedly treat Wednesday’s contest as their own defining moment.
While the best runner-up across the three groups will also earn a home Quarter Final, both sides will be determined to take matters into their own hands.
Staying rock solid at the back
Across two matchdays, City’s defensive structure has been nothing short of outstanding. The squad has yet to concede a goal and has allowed barely a sniff of opportunity for either opponent.
Rebekah Stott and Taylor Otto have marshalled the backline with their typical composure, but much of City’s security has stemmed from the midfield engine room, where Laura Hughes and Leah Davidson have been exceptional in breaking up play and preventing opposing attacks from ever gaining traction.

High up the pitch, City’s forwards have matched that defensive commitment with relentless pressing, suffocating opposition build-up and forcing turnovers in dangerous areas.
A third consecutive clean sheet on Wednesday would not only round out a flawless Group Stage but also secure that coveted home Quarter Final. Expect another disciplined, well-structured effort from Matricciani’s side.
Attacking mix
At the other end, City’s attack has been equally impressive – and impressively balanced. Four players; Danella Butrus, Deven Jackson, Leticia McKenna and Holly McNamara, enter Matchday Three with two goals each, highlighting the depth and variety in City’s front third.

With the next domestic fixture still more than two weeks away, Matricciani is expected to field another strong attacking side in search of a perfect Group Stage finish.
One watch point will be the status of 2024/25 Golden Boot winner Holly McNamara, who was substituted as a precaution in the first half on Sunday due to a minor knock.
Should McNamara – who was on Monday named in the Matildas squad for the upcoming window – be rested from the final Group Stage fixture, it could create an opportunity for Chinaza Uchendu to make her first City start.
The Nigerian international – who has been eased back in following a minor hamstring niggle – has looked lively off the bench and provides a strong, experienced option in the final third.
