Melbourne City FC agrees transfer of Kai Trewin to New York City FC

Melbourne City FC can confirm defender Kai Trewin will depart the Club to join Major League Soccer side New York City FC, following the completion of a transfer for an undisclosed fee.

Trewin makes the move across the City Football Group to sister club New York City FC, where he will link up with Socceroos teammate and former City star Aiden O’Neill.

Arriving in Melbourne ahead of the 2024/25 season, Trewin made an immediate impact in City blue, quickly establishing himself as a key figure within the Club’s defensive unit.

His outstanding form throughout the campaign saw him awarded the Scott Jamieson Medal as Melbourne City’s Player of the Year, playing a pivotal role in a Championship-winning season.

The 24-year-old’s versatility has been a hallmark of his time at City, featuring prominently both in central defence and, more recently, as a defensive midfielder during the current campaign.

Trewin’s strong form at club level was recognised on the international stage in November last year, when he earned his first Socceroos caps, starting and playing every minute in fixtures against Venezuela and Colombia.

He becomes the latest player to develop at City and go on to represent the national team, joining a growing list that includes Jordan Bos, Connor Metcalfe, Marco Tilio, and most recently Patrick Beach.

Trewin departs Melbourne City with immediate effect, concluding his time at the Club with 47 appearances and three goals across an impressive 18-month spell.

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said:

“While it’s always disappointing to lose a key player at this stage of the season, a significant offer was made to both the Club and the player, which after strong consideration, we have accepted.

“Kai has had a huge impact since arriving at the Club, both through his performances on the pitch and the professionalism he brought to our group.

“We fully support him in taking this next step in his career and wish him every success in New York.”

Kai Trewin said:

“My time in Melbourne has been really special, and being part of a Championship-winning season is something I’ll always be proud of.

“I’d like to thank everyone at the Club for making me feel so welcome from day one, as well as the City fans for their incredible support over the past 18 months.

“Melbourne City will always hold a special place in my heart.”
