Over the January school holidays, City in the Community hosted a successful two-day Young Leaders Program, welcoming passionate young people to build, grow and connect through the power of football.
Held at Monash University and the City Football Academy, the program brought together over 50 participants aged 16–24, eager to upskill in communication, community leadership, and coaching. It was designed to not only teach practical skills, but also build confidence, connection and a sense of purpose through community football initiatives.
Across the two days, the group learned about City in the Community’s programs, ranging from school and community outreach to matchday activations and correctional facility initiatives. Sessions were run by our Melbourne team alongside Paul Kelly from City in the Community Manchester, bringing a global perspective to local community work.
Participants gained hands-on experience in coaching fundamental, leadership and teamwork, effective communication and event and community program delivery

“I really enjoyed learning about the community aspects they do, including the Correctional Facilities program,” said Maddy, one of the program participants. “I would definitely hope to volunteer with the games and the Young Leaders program, get a career here and maybe do the degree of business and sport management.”
The Young Leaders program is more than a volunteer opportunity, it’s a launchpad for a career in sport. Over the past three years, more than 20 Young Leaders have progressed from volunteering to paid employment at Melbourne City FC and City in the Community.

Nihaal Singh, a City in the Community Coach, said: “Why I find this program so beneficial is because I started with Young Leaders a long time ago and throughout these programs, I’ve got some new opportunities to coach not just City in the Community but other parts of the Club.”
“I mean it’s so important for young people to get involved because it not only just teaches you football but teaches you a lot of life skills.”
By joining, participants become part of a passionate team delivering programs that make a difference across Melbourne’s communities.
