EXPLAINED: Who can we play in the ACL Elite Round of 16?

With the majority of Matchday 8 fixtures decided on Tuesday night, just two matches remain in the AFC Champions League Elite League Stage – City’s clash with Gangwon, and Ulsan HD’s meeting with Shanghai Port.

After a dramatic continental campaign that has included memorable away victories and crucial results across Asia, City enter the final day knowing we can finish anywhere between third and fifth, with three possible opponents awaiting in the Round of 16.

The Round of 16 fixture remains locked to the East Region, meaning City will face another East-based opponent in the next phase. From the Quarter Finals onwards however, clubs will be able to meet teams from the West Region, opening up a wider range of potential matchups later in the competition.

There is also a key incentive attached to ladder position. Teams finishing in the top four positions will host the second leg, while those ranked fifth to eighth will play the first leg at home. The two-legged Round of 16 ties will be played across March 3–4 and March 10–11.

So, what does tonight’s result against Gangwon mean? Here’s how the permutations play out.

AFC Champions League Elite East Region League Stage table ahead of Wednesday night’s fixtures.

IF WE WIN TONIGHT

Round of 16: City (3) v Johor Darul Ta’zim/Ulsan HD (6)

A win over Gangwon would see City surge into third place in the table, guaranteeing a second-leg home tie in the Round of 16.

As it stands, Johor Darul Ta’zim occupy sixth and would loom as our likely opponent. However, that could change depending on the outcome of the other remaining fixture.

Should Ulsan HD, who City defeated away last week, beat Shanghai Port by three or more goals, they would jump Johor on goal difference and instead meet City in the Round of 16.

SCORING DRAW

Ro16: City (4) v Buriram United (5)

Any draw with goals scored would almost certainly be enough to see City jump Buriram and finish fourth.

A 1–1 draw would leave the two sides level on points, goal difference and goals scored, with City holding the advantage via the fair play tiebreaker, barring an extremely card-heavy night against Gangwon.

A 2–2 draw or higher would see City progress on goals scored.

SCORELESS DRAW

Ro16: Buriram United (4) v City (5)

A 0–0 draw would see City and Buriram United finish level on 14 points. However, with Buriram holding the advantage on goals scored, City would be placed fifth, meaning our first leg would be played at home, followed by the return leg away.

Even if the Round of 16 matchup remains City v Buriram regardless, the distinction is important: a scoring draw would allow City to host the second leg, while a scoreless draw would not.

LOSS

Ro16: Buriram United (4) v City (5)

Put simply, a defeat would see the standings remain unchanged, with City finishing fifth and set to face Buriram in the Round of 16, with the first leg at home.
