Here’s what to keep an eye out for ahead of Sunday’s clash.
Shaping the race to the Plate
As the Ninja A-League season resumes following a three-week international break, the race for the Premiers Plate is finely poised at the top of the table.
City currently sits in first place in the midst of another impressive campaign, with the team chasing what would be a historic third consecutive Premiers Plate. However, there is still plenty of football left to play, and the final four rounds will go a long way to determining who ultimately finishes on top.

The next two fixtures loom particularly large for City, with clashes against second-placed Canberra United and third-placed Adelaide United set to shape the final standings.
First up is Sunday’s meeting with Canberra, who sit just three points (and goal difference) behind City. With so little separating the two sides, the visitors will be eager to close the gap and take a significant step in their own Premiership push.
City will also have a score to settle after falling 2-1 to Canberra away from home earlier in the season. After three weeks since our last game to rest, recover and prepare, our squad will be determined to produce a strong performance at home in what promises to be a pivotal afternoon.
A welcome addition to midfield
City will receive a timely boost ahead of Sunday’s clash with the return of 2023/24 Player of the Year Laura Hughes to the squad.
The Welsh international has been sidelined since early December with a knee injury, but has now completed her rehabilitation and is back available for selection. Her return adds valuable experience and composure to a midfield group that has already been performing strongly throughout the season.

Speaking with media ahead of the match, Head Coach Michael Matricciani indicated Hughes is likely to be eased back into action from the bench as she builds her match fitness. Even so, her presence in the squad provides an important option should City need fresh legs or a moment of quality in the middle of the park.
Hughes returns to a midfield unit already filled with talent, including Leah Davidson, Leticia McKenna and Shelby McMahon, giving Matricciani plenty of depth to call upon in what shapes as a tightly contested encounter.
Adjusting without key strikers
While City welcomes one important return, the team will also need to adapt to the absence of Golden Boot leader Holly McNamara.
The prolific forward remains with the Matildas as they compete in the knockout stages of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, meaning she will miss Sunday’s clash. McNamara has been one of the standout performers in the competition this season, leading the league’s scoring charts while also ranking among the top assist providers.
Replacing that level of production is no easy task, but City still has several attacking options capable of stepping up.
Chinaza Uchendu could be in line for a return to the starting XI after featuring off the bench in recent matches, while Deven Jackson and Bryleeh Henry are also more than capable of leading the line if called upon.

Canberra will be dealing with a similar challenge, with star striker and captain Michelle Heyman also away on international duty alongside McNamara.
While both teams will be missing their leading scorers, the quality across both squads ensures Sunday’s match still shapes as a fascinating and high-stakes contest.
