Melbourne City was made to settle for a point on Wednesday evening, with a tightly contested top-of-the-table clash against Adelaide United finishing in a 0-0 draw.
In a game that loomed as a defining moment in the Premiers Plate race, there was little to separate the two sides across the 90 minutes, with both defences standing strong to deny any breakthrough.
While City created the better of the late chances, it ultimately wasn’t to be, as the points were shared in a cagey encounter.

What happened?
The contest began in measured fashion, with both sides cautious in possession and neither able to carve out a meaningful opportunity in the opening exchanges.
City earned the first corner of the evening around the 15-minute mark, although Adelaide responded with a series of set pieces of their own shortly after. The visitors came closest during that spell, delivering a dangerous inswinging ball that required Mieres to rise confidently in traffic and claim under pressure.
Clear-cut chances remained at a premium throughout the first half, with both teams well organised defensively. Adelaide registered the first genuine sight at goal in the 34th minute when Adriana Taranto found space at the back post following a corner, but Leticia McKenna reacted sharply to produce a crucial block.
City looked to increase the tempo after the break and began the second half on the front foot, working the ball into dangerous areas and forcing Adelaide’s defence into a number of timely interventions.
However, the game soon returned to a more cagey rhythm, with both sides struggling to find the final pass in the attacking third. City built a period of sustained pressure midway through the half, winning successive corners as momentum began to shift.
Adelaide remained a threat on the counter, with Chelsea Dawber finding space down the left in the 71st minute, but her effort drifted wide of the target.
Looking to inject energy into the contest, Matricciani turned to his bench soon after, introducing Chinaza Uchendu in search of a spark. The forward made an immediate impact, winning a corner within moments of entering the field and helping City regain attacking momentum.
City began to push with greater urgency in the final stages. Davidson surged forward and picked out Aideen Keane in space, but her effort was unable to trouble the goalkeeper.
Further changes followed as Laura Hughes and Danella Butrus were introduced, and we came agonisingly close to finding a late winner in the 86th minute. Uchendu showed great composure to hold up play before laying the ball into the path of Rebekah Stott, whose powerful strike from the edge of the area crashed against the crossbar.
City continued to press, with Butrus heavily involved in the closing moments. The winger drove into the box and fired across goal before later producing a dangerous delivery from the left, but Bryleeh Henry was unable to apply the finishing touch as Adelaide scrambled to clear.
Despite a flurry of late chances, neither side could find the decisive goal, with the match finishing in a hard-fought stalemate.
What’s next?
City will now turn our attention to another important fixture on the road, travelling to face Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday afternoon as the race for the Premiers Plate continues.
Following that, attention will briefly shift to continental competition, with City set to host PFC Nasaf in the AFC Women’s Champions League Quarter Final on Sunday 29 March at the Home of the Matildas.
