ALM PREVIEW: Perth v City

Melbourne City is straight back on the road this weekend, travelling west to face Perth Glory on Sunday evening in another important Isuzu UTE A-League clash.

After returning to winning ways midweek, City will be looking to build momentum and continue climbing the table, with three valuable points on the line before the upcoming international break.

Here are the key talking points ahead of the trip to Perth.

Building momentum

City arrives in Perth off the back of a much-needed and confidence-boosting win over Sydney FC, snapping a difficult run of results at a crucial point in the season.

While the 1-0 scoreline may have suggested a tight contest, the performance told a different story. City created a number of strong chances throughout the 90 minutes and looked composed defensively, delivering one of our more complete displays in recent weeks. The decisive moment came early in the second half, when Max Caputo rose highest to head home from Daniel Arzani’s dangerous corner delivery.

It was a performance that offered plenty of encouragement, particularly with the business end of the season now fast approaching.

With the ladder still tightly contested and Finals spots up for grabs, building consistency will be key, and City will be eager to back up that strong showing with another positive result on the road.

A key enforcer returns

There is a significant boost for City heading into Sunday’s clash, with Andrew Nabbout returning to the squad after a two-month absence due to a calf injury.

The experienced attacker had been working his way back into strong form prior to the setback, starting four of five matches and bringing valuable energy and leadership to the front third. His return provides an added dimension to City’s attack, offering both versatility and experience as the season enters its defining stages.

However, City will be forced into at least one change to the starting XI, with Andreas Kuen unavailable due to suspension following yellow card accumulation. His absence opens the door for others to step into the midfield, with Zane Schreiber, Emin Durakovic and Lawrence Wong all pushing for an opportunity.

With several players competing for spots, selection shapes as an intriguing watch as Aurelio Vidmar looks to strike the right balance for a challenging away fixture.

Heading into the break on a high

Sunday’s clash presents an important opportunity for City to head into the international break on a positive note.

With the league pausing following this round, a result in Perth would not only secure back-to-back wins, but also provide a strong platform heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

Once play resumes, just five matches will remain, including a crucial run of three consecutive home fixtures that could define our Finals hopes.

While a number of players will depart for national team duties, including Patrick Beach and Aziz Behich who were both named in the Socceroos squad earlier this week, the majority of the squad will benefit from a short break before preparations ramp up again.

We’re certainly familiar with Sunday’s opponent, with this marking the third meeting between the two sides this season. The honours have been split so far, with City claiming an emphatic 4-0 win earlier in the campaign before Perth responded with victory in the most recent encounter.

With plenty on the line and momentum up for grabs, we’ll be determined to finish this block of fixtures strongly.
